1. What made me think about eternal truth
I'm writing this just after Fajr, quiet house, cup still warm. The question that stuck with me since I was a teenager is simple: when Quran talks about "eternal truth", what does it actually mean? Is it philosophy? Theology? Or something you live?
I think it's all three. And hadith makes it practical in a way that hit me quietly. What follows is just my honest notes, not final, but sincere.
2. Al-Haqq — Allah is the only eternal reality
When Islam says eternal truth, it points to Allah first. He is Al-Qadim — no beginning, no cause, no before. He is wajib al-wujud — necessary existence, not possible or dependent. Everything else is contingent — it could not exist. He must exist.
That's Tawhid at its root. Quran says He is "The First and the Last, the Evident and the Immanent" (57:3). His knowledge, power aren't add-ons, they are Him — One, not divided. That protects us from imagining Him like creation.
His name Al-Haqq means The Real. The only truly real. Everything else is fleeting, dependent on Him. If you build your life on what fades — money, fame, likes — you'll be disappointed. If you build on Al-Haqq — the stable, independent reality — your values shift. You stop chasing temporary and aim for eternal. That alone changes mental health — less anxiety, more peace, because you're anchored.
Eternal (Allah)
No beginning, no cause, self-sufficient, necessary. Everything else depends on Him.
Contingent (creation)
Has beginning, could not exist, depends on Allah, changes, fades.
Why does one eternal necessary being mean one God? Simple logic: if there were two independent eternal beings, they'd either be identical — then they're one — or different — then they'd need something to make them different, which would make them dependent, not necessary. So necessary being must be One. That's philosophical backbone of Tawhid.
3. Hikmah — wisdom is more than knowledge
Hikmah is not just smartness. In Islam it's deep understanding of Allah's commands, why we exist, what our ultimate goals are, plus acting on it. Useful knowledge plus righteous deeds together.
Quran praises 'aql — intellect — as hidden power to discover truths, solve problems. Hikmah uses that 'aql plus revelation. It bridges. It says reason and revelation don't clash — they help each other. Faith doesn't ask you to switch off brain; it asks you to use it to reflect on nature, history, self, and see Allah as ultimate Cause.
And hikmah grows. It's not fixed. It's ever-increasing if you keep sincere belief, fear Allah, stay humble, avoid arrogance that rusts heart. So wisdom is lifelong — learn, unlearn, refine, try again.
4. Quran and Sunnah — need each other
Quran is Allah's literal words. Sunnah is Prophet ﷺ's sayings, actions, approvals. They are like body and spirit, water and life — inseparable.
Quran gives general: establish prayer. Sunnah shows how — how many rakahs, what to recite. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal said Sunnah explains Quran, is proof of Quran. Companions directly asked Prophet ﷺ when they didn't understand a verse. That shows Shariah is both together — beliefs, ethics, transactions, worship — all from both sources. Without Sunnah, you'd misread Quran badly.
5. Tawhid — why oneness matters now
Central message in Quran 112:
"He is Allah, One. Allah, Eternal, Absolute. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none like unto Him." (112:1-4)
He is Ever-Living, Sustainer, All-Knowing, All-Powerful. Not dependent. Why emphasise? Because it frees you. If only Allah is truly in charge, you stop being slave to idols, bosses, money, trends, ideologies. You become truly free. That freedom brings peace, hope, trust in hard times — nothing harms you without Allah's will. That flexibility gives psychological balance.
Quran challenges people: Were you created from nothing? Did you create yourselves? Can a ship sail itself? A watermill run itself without someone managing? A book copy itself forever without author? Universe has order — points to Creator. That's not blind faith, it's reasoning from signs (ayat) in creation.
6. Why are we here? Purpose
Quran answers plainly: "I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me" (51:56). Worship here is not just salah — includes helping others, seeking knowledge, working honestly — all can be worship with right intention.
And "He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds" (67:2). Life is test with freedom to choose. Good is distinguished from bad, and Allah promises not to treat good-doers same as corrupt. That's justice that motivates excellence.
More — we are Khalifah — stewards on earth. Given intellect, moral sense, ability to use resources. Not owners to exploit, but trustees to manage. So we must protect earth, keep balance (Mizan), not waste.
7. We are responsible — really
Islam says man is evidence against himself — even if he makes excuses (75:14-15). You will be judged for what you did, small and big.
Wealth
How you earned and spent — fair or unfair? Not extravagant or miserly?
Knowledge
Did you use it to benefit or to cheat? To build or destroy?
Speech
Tongue — truth, reform, or lying, backbiting, insult? Quran 17:36 says hearing, sight, heart — all will be questioned.
Power
Status, job, strength — used to help or to oppress? For Allah or for ego?
Why this strict accounting? To build self-judgment. You correct yourself before anyone corrects you. Change starts inside — Quran 13:11 says Allah doesn't change condition of people until they change what is in themselves. So you can't just blame outside — you have to start inside.
And collective duty too — enjoin good, forbid evil (9:71). You can't say someone else will do it. If your community sees wrong and stays silent, all bear responsibility.
8. Daily ethics Islam teaches
Quran and Sunnah give clear, practical ethics — aiming for Raza-e Ilahi, Allah's pleasure, rooted in Taqwa. Prophet ﷺ said, "I was sent to perfect good character."
Tawhid & Devotion
Worship Allah alone
Parents
Be kind, humble, especially in old age
Moderation
Neither miserly nor wasteful
Honesty
Keep promises, fair business, no bribery
Justice
Judge fairly even against yourself — merit based
Speech
Speak truth, mild, low voice, no mocking, no suspicion, no spying, no backbiting
Neighbours
Kind to neighbours near and far
Environment
Don't abuse earth — Khilafah trust
Wisdom here is to build people who are morally upright, socially responsible, spiritually aware. Faith incomplete without character. And good character is best dawah — people see it before they hear your arguments.
9. Afterlife — why it gives life meaning
Quran and Sunnah say life doesn't end at death. It continues. "Then on Day of Judgement you will be resurrected" (23:16). Every deed recorded — fastened to neck like open book, you read it yourself, you judge yourself. Perfect justice, Law of Requital, no exception.
Without afterlife, creation would look pointless. With it, good and evil mean something. Divine justice ensures effort not wasted. That historically transformed societies — during Abu Bakr (RA) time, judge post became unnecessary for a while because people policed themselves believing they will be accountable.
Quran gives proofs for resurrection — you were drop, Allah gathered and made you. Seed rots in soil, then plant comes. Rain brings dead land to life. Fire from green tree — opposites from same source. If Allah can do that, He can recreate. That builds conviction.
Remembering death helps restrain endless desires and pushes you to do good now, not later. Patience and hope in trials come from knowing Allah controls affairs.
10. How this helps today — mind, society
Eternal truths like Tawhid heal inside. Believing in One Creator who controls all gives love, satisfaction, sense of purpose, prevents depression, stress. Nafs — self — has sense of right and wrong, beauty, order. When acknowledged, it leads to just, peaceful life. Purifying nafs leads to success.
Socially, Tawhid means equality — no racism, no caste, no gender superiority for worth — all equal before One. Brotherhood based on values, not blood. Justice even against yourself, parents, relatives. Fulfilling promises builds trust, which holds society together. Warning against lying, fake news — because misinformation ruins trust and causes chaos.
Environmentally, Tawhid says universe is Allah's creation, we are stewards (Khalifah), Amanah (trust). Keep balance (Mizan), don't waste. Prophet ﷺ said all creatures are like family of Allah, dearest to Allah are kindest to His family — includes animals, plants. So green ethics is worship.
Scholars old and new kept interpreting Quran — Shah Waliullah, Farahi, Islahi, Abu Hanifah, Malik, Shafi'i, Ahmad, and modern - Maulana Wahiduddin Khan says religion in original form is timeless like natural elements — monotheism, sincerity, good character don't change, but Shariah and Minhaj adapt with Ijtihad. That keeps Islam relevant without losing core.
Today we have different approaches — socio-political tafsir, thematic tafsir, scientific, linguistic. Feminist-liberal readings trying to recover egalitarian spirit. All show Quran still alive, still guiding. Tawhid becomes lens for social justice, environment, mental health now.
What I take
Eternal truth Al-Haqq is not abstract philosophy. It's Allah Himself — the only One who always was and always will be. Everything else borrows existence from Him. Knowing that reorders your life — you stop chasing temporary as if it's eternal.
Hikmah is knowing that plus living it — useful knowledge plus righteous deeds, reason plus reflection on nature, history, self, through lens of Allah as ultimate Cause. Faith and reason aren't enemies; they help each other. Wisdom grows — not fixed — with sincere belief, fear of Allah, humility.
Quran and Sunnah together are enough. One is word, one is example. Together they give beliefs, ethics, transactions, worship — full life blueprint.
Afterlife gives meaning — without it, nothing matters; with it, every atom counts. And that belief, if you really hold it, makes you calmer, kinder, more just today — because you know you will answer for it.
May Allah make us people of Al-Haqq and Hikmah — who seek truth, live wisely, and remember Him in all we do. Ameen.
