Quick take: I'll be honest — this verse stopped me. Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. It's not poetry about photons. It's about the One who gives sight to my eyes and sight to my heart. In this piece, I walk through what An-Nur, Al-Hadi, Al-Alim, Al-Qayyum and other names mean for my daily worship, my salah, and that darkness I sometimes feel inside.

1. Why This Verse Stops Me

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim. All praise is for Allah. We praise Him, we ask for His help, and we ask Him to forgive us. I ask Him to fill our hearts with His light and pull us out of the darkness of sin, pride, and heedlessness.

When I read:

اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth."

Surah an-Nur 24:35

I'll be honest, I pause. This isn't a small line. It touches aqidah, worship, and the state of my heart all at once.

And I have to check myself straight away. Allah is not like His creation. I must never shrink His Noor into a bulb, a ray, or a physical force.

لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ

"There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."

Surah ash-Shura 42:11

So I reflect with adab. Created light is a sign. Allah is the Creator of the sign. I love the sign, but I worship only Him.

2. An-Nur – The Source of All True Light

The first name that comes to my heart here is An-Nur. When Allah says He is the Light of the heavens and the earth, I don't just think about what my eyes see. I think about the One who lights up hearts, clears minds, and shows a lost soul its way back.

There's a difference between seeing and truly seeing. I've met people with perfect eyesight who live in moral darkness. I've seen people drowning in information but starving for wisdom. The greatest light isn't the light that shows me the world. It's the light that shows me where I stand before Allah.

اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ

"Allah is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:257

This verse humbles me. I don't drag myself out of darkness with cleverness. Allah brings me out. He rescues my heart from confusion and sin.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to beg for light in a beautiful du'a:

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي لِسَانِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا وَمِنْ فَوْقِي نُورًا وَمِنْ تَحْتِي نُورًا وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا وَعَنْ شِمَالِي نُورًا وَمِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ نُورًا وَمِنْ خَلْفِي نُورًا وَاجْعَلْ فِي نَفْسِي نُورًا وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا

"O Allah, place light in my heart, light on my tongue, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light above me, light below me, light on my right, light on my left, light before me, light behind me, light in my soul, and magnify light for me..."

Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim

That du'a taught me something simple. Light isn't just outside me. It's something I have to beg Allah to place inside me.

The real light I need isn't just for my eyes — it's for my heart.

3. Al-Hadi – The One Who Guides to His Light

Noor in the Qur'an is tied to hidayah. I can't talk about light without talking about Al-Hadi, the Guide.

يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَن يَشَاءُ

"Allah guides to His light whom He wills."

Surah an-Nur 24:35

This keeps me grounded. Guidance isn't a prize for being smart. It's a gift. I can read and research all night, but if Allah doesn't open my heart, I'll stay lost while thinking I'm informed.

قَدْ جَاءَكُم مِّنَ اللَّهِ نُورٌ وَكِتَابٌ مُبِينٌ

"There has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book."

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:15

يَهْدِي بِهِ اللَّهُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَهُ سُبُلَ السَّلَامِ

"By it Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace."

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:16

So I remind myself — the Qur'an isn't just to sharpen my arguments. It's to soften my heart. If I talk about Noor but miss salah, delay tawbah, and live carelessly, then I'm talking about light while choosing shadows.

I ask myself: Am I treating the Qur'an as information to collect, or as light to follow? Information fills my notes. Light changes my steps.

4. Al-Alim – His Knowledge Has No Limits

The more I look at creation, the more I realise how little I know. What looks simple is often deep. That's why Al-Alim hits me hard here.

وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

"And He is, of all things, Knowing."

Surah al-Hadid 57:3

Allah's knowledge doesn't grow. He doesn't learn by trial and error. He knows what is seen and unseen, what was, what is, and what hides in chests. Human knowledge is patched together — we revise, we correct, we guess. His knowledge is perfect from the start.

Remembering this protects me from arrogance. It's easy to feel clever after reading a few articles. But true knowledge makes me humble, not proud.

The heavens and the earth themselves are signs — they point beyond themselves to Al-Alim, the All-Knowing.

5. Al-Khaliq & Al-Musawwir – Creator and Fashioner

When I see order and beauty — the sky measured, the earth balanced, a face formed — I think of Al-Khaliq and Al-Musawwir.

هُوَ اللَّهُ الْخَالِقُ الْبَارِئُ الْمُصَوِّرُ

"He is Allah, the Creator, the Maker, the Fashioner..."

Surah al-Hashr 59:24

Nothing is random. Everything is measured and shaped with wisdom. So when I admire light, life, or the structure of the cosmos, I don't stop at "wow, what a system." I say SubhanAllah. This harmony didn't make itself. This beauty didn't pop into being.

A believer's lens: I don't see nature as just nature. I read it as ayat — signs. A sunrise isn't just a sunrise. It's a reminder that Al-Khaliq is still creating, still fashioning, still showing His wisdom.

6. Al-Qayyum – Who Holds Everything Up

Another name that weighs on me here is Al-Qayyum — the One who sustains and upholds all things.

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَاهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

"Allah — there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:255 – Ayatul Kursi

Nothing stands on its own. Nothing lasts by its own power. Every atom, every heartbeat, every orbit continues only because Allah allows it to continue.

This changes how I see stability. What feels solid is actually dependent. What feels permanent is being held up moment by moment by my Lord. That thought makes me feel both awe and neediness. I'm not living in a self-running universe. I'm living in a universe that is constantly kept alive by Allah.

The Qur'an itself is described as light — not to be shelved, but to be lived.

7. Ar-Razzaq & Al-Muhyi – Provider and Giver of Life

Light leads me to think about life itself. That's why I turn to Ar-Razzaq and Al-Muhyi.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ

"Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm."

Surah adh-Dhariyat 51:58

اعْلَمُوا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُحْيِي الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا

"Know that Allah gives life to the earth after its death."

Surah al-Hadid 57:17

Yes, Allah creates means. Jobs, rain, trade, ideas — all are means. But the Provider behind every means is Allah. If I get fixated on the means and forget Him, I've missed the point.

And this isn't just about body. My heart needs life too. A heart can die while the body walks around — through sin, endless scrolling, love of dunya, and no dhikr. Allah revives hearts through tawbah, Qur'an, and sincere du'a. I need Him to keep my body alive, but I need Him even more to bring my heart back to life.

Food, water, sleep — all rizq from Ar-Razzaq. I thank Him for the obvious and the hidden.

Dhikr, Qur'an, salah, tawbah — this is how a dead heart starts beating again.

8. Az-Zahir & Al-Batin – Manifest and Hidden

Among the most majestic names here are Az-Zahir and Al-Batin.

هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

"He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is Knowing of all things."

Surah al-Hadid 57:3

Allah is manifest through His signs. His mercy shows in revelation. His wisdom shows in creation. His power shows in how hearts turn. Yet He is hidden from my senses. I don't box Him into an image. I don't limit Him with physics.

This balance keeps my aqidah safe. I see His signs everywhere, but I know His essence is beyond all likeness.

حِجَابُهُ النُّورُ لَوْ كَشَفَهُ لَأَحْرَقَتْ سُبُحَاتُ وَجْهِهِ مَا انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ بَصَرُهُ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ

"His veil is light. If He were to remove it, the splendours of His Face would burn all of creation as far as His sight reaches."

Sahih Muslim

That hadith leaves me quiet. Divine reality is far greater than my words can carry.

Common confusion cleared: When we say Allah is An-Nur, we don't mean Allah IS physical light like the sun. Physical light is created. Allah is the Creator of light. His Noor is an attribute befitting His majesty, not like our light. We affirm it as Allah affirmed it, without tashbih (likening to creation) and without ta'til (denying it).

9. Al-Awwal & Al-Akhir – First and Last

This subject pulls me to Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir too.

Everything I know has a start. My life, my health, my money, my plans — all began somewhere and will end somewhere. But Allah is before all things and after all things. Time touches me. It doesn't touch Him like it touches creation.

When I really sit with that, my worries shrink. Why am I so attached to what must pass? Why build my heart around what will fade? The eternal belongs to Allah alone.

10. When Science Makes Me More Humble

I'll be honest — when I read about light in science, its strange behaviour, how it puzzles even experts, I don't feel more arrogant. I feel smaller, in a good way.

I don't use science to "prove" Allah in a cheap way. I use it as tafakkur. If even created light — a tiny creation — holds so much depth, then how great is the One who created it?

The deeper I look, the less right I have to be proud. The universe isn't shallow. It's full of signs. But I keep the line clear: created light is created. Allah is the Creator. The sign can spark wonder, but worship goes only to Him.

If I want light, the Prophet ﷺ taught me where to look — prayer is light.

11. What This Means for My Heart Today

If I talk about Noor, I have to ask myself hard questions. What darkness still lives in me?

 Pride?

Do I love to be right more than I love to be guided? Do I argue to win?

 Heedlessness?

How many hours pass without remembering Allah? Is my heart awake or on autopilot?

⏳ Delayed Tawbah?

Am I saying "later" to repentance as if later is guaranteed?

 Dunya Attachment?

Does my mood rise and fall only with money, likes, and praise?

 Knowledge Without Action?

Am I collecting quotes about light while walking in shadows?

爐 My Du'a Today

O Allah, don't leave me to myself, not even for a blink.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

الصَّلَاةُ نُورٌ

"Prayer is light."

Sahih Muslim

So if I want light, I must guard my salah. If I want light, I must live with the Qur'an, because Allah calls it light. If I want light, I must turn to Him with sincerity, not just curiosity.

12. A Light I Must Beg For, Not Just Talk About

I don't want this to stay as an idea that impresses my mind but leaves my life the same. I want it to soften me, fix me, and pull me closer to Allah.

He is...
An-Nur — the source of all true light.
Al-Hadi — the One who guides to His light.
Al-Alim — who knows what I show and what I hide.
Al-Khaliq and Al-Musawwir — who created and fashioned with perfect wisdom.
Al-Qayyum — who sustains the heavens and the earth.
Ar-Razzaq and Al-Muhyi — who provides and gives life.
Az-Zahir and Al-Batin — known through His signs, beyond all limits.
Al-Awwal and Al-Akhir — before all things and after all things.

So I end where I began — begging. O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my hearing, light in my sight, light above me, light below me, light on my right, light on my left, light before me, light behind me. Make the Qur'an the light of my chest, the spring of my heart, and the remover of my sorrow. Guide me to Your light and don't leave me to the darkness of myself, not even for the blink of an eye. Ameen.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلِ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي وَنُورَ صَدْرِي وَجِلَاءَ حُزْنِي وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

"O Allah, make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the reliever of my anxiety."
