Time in the Quran: Relativity and a Day Like 1000 Years
Before you start
For most of history everyone assumed time was fixed - one universal clock ticking identically for everybody. Einstein showed that's wrong: time runs at different rates depending on where you are and how fast you're moving. The Qur'an, centuries earlier, speaks about time in a way that never once assumes it's absolute - days of a thousand years, days of fifty thousand, sleepers who lose three centuries and think it was an afternoon. This is the long version of my notes: the real physics with the experiments that confirmed it, every relevant verse with its Arabic, what the classical commentators said, and an honest account of where this argument is strong and where it gets stretched.

The assumption everyone made for 2,000 years
I'll be honest, until I read into this properly I'd never questioned time at all. It just runs. A second is a second. Everyone everywhere gets the same one, and the universe keeps a master clock somewhere behind the scenery.
That assumption is ancient and it was held by very serious people. Newton wrote it into his physics as a stated principle - absolute, true and mathematical time, flowing equably without relation to anything external. Not a guess he made in passing. A foundation.
And it's wrong.
What I find interesting isn't only that the old view was mistaken. It's that it was so intuitive that nobody seriously questioned it for two millennia - and that the correction, when it finally came, was one of the strangest things science has ever had to swallow. Einstein himself spent years uncomfortable with where it led.
Hold that in mind for the rest of the article, because it's the thing that makes the Qur'anic material worth a second look. We're not comparing the Qur'an against ignorance. We're comparing it against a confident, universal, deeply reasonable assumption that survived until 1905.
What Einstein actually showed
The insight arrived in two stages, and keeping them apart makes everything clearer.
Special relativity (1905) started from an oddity: the speed of light comes out the same no matter how fast you're moving when you measure it. That shouldn't happen. Run towards a light beam and you ought to measure it arriving faster, the way you would with a thrown ball. You don't.
Einstein took that seriously and followed it. If the speed of light is fixed for everyone, then something else has to give - and what gives is time and distance themselves. They stretch and compress depending on your motion.
General relativity (1915) brought gravity in. Mass warps the fabric of spacetime, and that warping affects the rate at which time passes. The deeper into a gravitational well you sit, the slower your clock runs.
No universal now
There's no single moment called "the present" shared across the universe. Whether two distant events are simultaneous depends on who's asking.
Gravity slows clocks
Stronger gravity, slower time. A clock at sea level genuinely runs slower than one on a mountain top.
Speed slows clocks
The faster you travel relative to someone, the slower your clock runs compared with theirs.
It's real, not apparent
This isn't a measuring illusion or a trick of perspective. The clocks aren't malfunctioning. Time itself runs at different rates.
That last card is the one people struggle with, and I did too. The instinct is to assume one clock must be "really" right and the other distorted. There is no such privileged clock. Both are correct in their own frame, and that's the whole point.
Two clocks, thirty-three centimetres apart
This is my favourite experiment in the whole subject, because of how ordinary the scale is.
In 2010, physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Colorado took two optical atomic clocks - accurate to roughly one second in several billion years - and raised one of them by 33 centimetres. About one step on a staircase.
The higher clock ran faster. Measurably, repeatably, exactly as general relativity predicts, because it sat fractionally further from Earth's mass.
Work the difference out over a 79-year lifetime and it comes to something like 90 billionths of a second. Utterly negligible in practice. Completely decisive in principle.
Why 33 centimetres matters so much
If time only ran at different rates near black holes or at relativistic speeds, you could file it under exotic physics and carry on. But it doesn't. It's happening between your head and your feet as you read this. Absolute time isn't merely wrong at the extremes - it's wrong in your living room, by a measurable amount.
Stephen Hawking often illustrated this with twins: one living up a mountain, one at sea level. Reunite them decades later and the mountain twin has aged very slightly more, because the weaker gravity up there let their clock run faster. For a long time that was a thought experiment. NIST turned it into a reading on an instrument.
Speed slows time too
The other half of the picture is velocity. The faster something moves relative to you, the slower its clock runs from your point of view. This is time dilation.
At walking pace or aircraft speed the effect is far too small to notice. As you approach the speed of light it becomes dramatic and then extreme.
Hence the twin paradox. Send one twin off at close to light speed and bring them home, and they've aged less than the sibling who stayed. Nothing biological is happening - their time genuinely ran slower. And it isn't symmetrical, despite how it first looks, because the travelling twin accelerates and turns around, which breaks the symmetry between the two frames.
GPS satellites
They move fast, which slows their clocks, and sit in weaker gravity, which speeds them up. Gravity wins by about 38 microseconds a day.
Why that matters
Left uncorrected, that error would push GPS fixes out by roughly 10 kilometres every single day. Satnav depends on relativity being right.
Muons
Particles formed high in the atmosphere should decay long before reaching the ground. They arrive anyway, because at their speed their internal clocks run slow.
Particle accelerators
Short-lived particles last measurably longer when accelerated to near light speed. Routine, everyday confirmation.
The GPS example is the one I'd offer anyone sceptical that this is real. Relativity is not a curiosity kept in a laboratory. It's a live correction running inside a device in your pocket, applied continuously, without which the thing would be useless within hours.
The experiments that settled it
Worth listing these, because "Einstein said so" isn't an argument and the confirmations are genuinely impressive.
1919 - eclipse
Eddington measured starlight bending around the Sun during a total eclipse. Spacetime curvature confirmed, and Einstein became famous overnight.
1959 - Pound-Rebka
Light shifted in frequency travelling just 22 metres up a Harvard tower, confirming gravitational time dilation on a building.
1971 - Hafele-Keating
Atomic clocks flown around the world on commercial airliners returned disagreeing with the clock left behind, by the predicted amounts.
2004-11 - Gravity Probe B
NASA confirmed that Earth's rotation drags spacetime around with it. The fabric isn't a fixed stage - it moves.
2010 - NIST clocks
Time dilation demonstrated over 33 centimetres of height and at 10 metres per second walking speed.
2015 - LIGO
Gravitational waves detected directly - ripples in spacetime itself from colliding black holes a billion light years away.
That's a century of independent confirmations using completely different methods. Whatever else is arguable in this article, the physics isn't.
The sleepers in the cave
Now to the Qur'an, and the passage cited most in this discussion - the Companions of the Cave, Ashab al-Kahf, in Surah 18.
A group of young believers flee persecution and shelter in a cave. God puts them into a sleep-like state.
فَضَرَبْنَا عَلَىٰ آذَانِهِمْ فِي الْكَهْفِ سِنِينَ عَدَدًا ثُمَّ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِنَعْلَمَ أَيُّ الْحِزْبَيْنِ أَحْصَىٰ لِمَا لَبِثُوا أَمَدًا
So We cast a cover of sleep over their ears in the cave for a number of years. Then We awakened them, that We might show which of the two factions was best at calculating the time they had remained. Qur'an 18:11-12
Read what the verse says the awakening was for: to show which group could better calculate how long they'd stayed. Measured duration is written into the purpose of the story from the very first line. That's an unusual thing to build a miracle narrative around.
Then they wake.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ بَعَثْنَاهُمْ لِيَتَسَاءَلُوا بَيْنَهُمْ قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِّنْهُمْ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ قَالُوا رَبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا لَبِثْتُمْ
And similarly, We awakened them that they might question one another. Said a speaker from among them, "How long have you remained?" They said, "We have remained a day or part of a day." They said, "Your Lord knows best how long you remained." Qur'an 18:19
A day, or part of a day. Then the actual figure, a few verses later:
وَلَبِثُوا فِي كَهْفِهِمْ ثَلَاثَ مِائَةٍ سِنِينَ وَازْدَادُوا تِسْعًا
And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine. Qur'an 18:25
Three centuries, experienced as an afternoon. And notice where the sleepers themselves land: "your Lord knows best how long you remained." The story has them concede that their own measurement is unreliable - which is, in effect, the moral of the passage stated by its own characters.
Perception and physics are two different things
Here I need to slow right down, because this is exactly where articles on this topic go wrong, and I'd rather be useful than impressive.
Two quite different ideas keep getting welded together:
Subjective duration
How long something feels. Dreams, anaesthesia, boredom, absorption in work. Entirely real - but it's a fact about brains, not about clocks.
Physical time dilation
What accurate clocks actually record. Relativity concerns this. Two atomic clocks genuinely disagree with no observer's mind involved at all.
Overclaim: The cave story describes relativistic time dilation, proving the Qur'an contained Einstein's physics.
Careful reading: The cave narrative is primarily about perceived duration - the sleepers' experience set against the calendar. That's a profound point about time not being what we assume, but it isn't gravitational or velocity-based dilation, and claiming otherwise is easy to knock down.
There's also a claim circulating that time is "only a perception inside the brain" with no external existence. I'd leave that one alone entirely. It's a philosophical position rather than a scientific finding, and relativity points the other way: time is a real physical dimension that curves and stretches. If it were purely mental, two atomic clocks - which have no minds - wouldn't disagree with each other.
The honest version is more interesting anyway. The Qur'an consistently treats duration as relative to the observer, at a period when every human culture assumed it was fixed and universal. That's the striking thing on its own. It doesn't need promoting to a physics lecture.
The man who slept a hundred years
The cave isn't the only such passage, and the second one is arguably sharper because it includes a control.
فَأَمَاتَهُ اللَّهُ مِائَةَ عَامٍ ثُمَّ بَعَثَهُ قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتَ قَالَ لَبِثْتُ يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ قَالَ بَل لَّبِثْتَ مِائَةَ عَامٍ فَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِكَ وَشَرَابِكَ لَمْ يَتَسَنَّهْ وَانظُرْ إِلَىٰ حِمَارِكَ
So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him. He said, "How long have you remained?" The man said, "I have remained a day or part of a day." He said, "Rather, you have remained one hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey." Qur'an 2:259
The same estimate appears - "a day or part of a day" - from a completely different person in a different story. And then something clever: two reference points are supplied for comparison. His food and drink, unspoiled, as though barely any time had passed. His donkey, reduced to bones.
Three clocks in one scene
The man's own sense of time says a day. His food says almost no time. His donkey says a century. Three measurements of the same interval, all disagreeing - and the passage presents that disagreement as the lesson rather than a puzzle to resolve.
I'd stop short of calling that physics. But as a narrative demonstration that "how long was it?" has no single answer independent of what you're measuring against, it's remarkably well constructed.
A day like a thousand years
Now the verses I find genuinely arresting, because these aren't about perception at all. They're about different time scales existing simultaneously.
وَإِنَّ يَوْمًا عِندَ رَبِّكَ كَأَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ
And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count. Qur'an 22:47
Look hard at the wording, because it's doing something precise that translations tend to soften.
It doesn't state that a day with your Lord equals a thousand years, as a fixed conversion. It says mimmā ta'uddūn - "of what you count". Your counting. Your frame of reference. The measurement is explicitly attributed to the people being addressed.
And there's the ka- prefix on ka-alfi sanah - "like a thousand years". A comparison, not an equation.
يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ ثُمَّ يَعْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ مِّمَّا تَعُدُّونَ
He arranges each matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count. Qur'an 32:5
The same qualifier again - mimmā ta'uddūn. It keeps being attached. Whoever is speaking here will not give a duration without specifying whose measurement it is.
That's the detail I'd point at if someone asked me for the single strongest thing in this article. Not the numbers - the qualifier. A text that reflexively tags its time spans with "by your reckoning" is a text that isn't treating time as absolute.
Fifty thousand years
And then a completely different figure.
تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. Qur'an 70:4
A thousand in two places. Fifty thousand here. Same word - yawm, day - carrying wildly different magnitudes.
It's worth adding that yawm in Qur'anic Arabic is elastic by nature. It covers a solar day, but also a period, an epoch, an era. The creation "days" use the same word, as does yawm al-qiyamah, the Day of Judgement, which is plainly not twenty-four hours.
Is that a contradiction?
Critics raise this, and they should - it's the obvious question. Let me take it properly rather than waving it away.
The objection: if a divine day is a thousand years in 22:47 and 32:5, it can't also be fifty thousand in 70:4. Pick one.
Objection: The Qur'an gives two different values for the same thing, so it contradicts itself.
Response: That objection only works if you assume a "day" is a fixed universal unit needing one true conversion. The verses describe different events - the arranging and return of affairs in 32:5, the ascent of angels and the Spirit in 70:4, a warning about divine patience in 22:47. Different contexts, different measures.
Here's the part I think is genuinely interesting. The objection presupposes absolute time. It only bites if duration is a single fixed quantity that must have one correct value. Under relativity, the interval between two events depends on the path taken through spacetime - so different "days" having different extents is precisely what you'd expect rather than a flaw.
I want to be careful: I'm not claiming the verses are describing relativistic intervals. I'm making a narrower point. The internal logic of the text is consistent with time being variable, and the criticism of it depends on assuming time isn't.
A whole life that felt like an afternoon
A third strand runs through the Qur'an: how long earthly life will seem in retrospect, on the Day of Judgement.
يَوْمَ يَدْعُوكُمْ فَتَسْتَجِيبُونَ بِحَمْدِهِ وَتَظُنُّونَ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا
On the Day He will call you and you will respond with praise of Him, and you will think that you remained only a little. Qur'an 17:52
The same idea recurs elsewhere with people estimating a day, part of a day, or an hour - reusing the exact vocabulary the cave sleepers and the man with the donkey used.
قَالَ كَمْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ عَدَدَ سِنِينَ قَالُوا لَبِثْنَا يَوْمًا أَوْ بَعْضَ يَوْمٍ فَاسْأَلِ الْعَادِّينَ
He will say, "How long did you remain on earth in number of years?" They will say, "We remained a day or part of a day; ask those who enumerate." Qur'an 23:112-113
"Ask those who enumerate." Again the text hands the question of measurement off to someone else, as if to say: don't trust the felt duration, it isn't reliable.
This one lands personally rather than scientifically for me. Ask anyone in their seventies where the time went and you'll get some version of "it went in a flash". The verse describes something people already recognise, then extends it - the whole thing, viewed from the other side, will look brief.
What the classical scholars said
I wanted to check whether these readings are modern inventions retro-fitted after Einstein, because if so that would matter a great deal.
They aren't. The commentators had no physics, but they were entirely clear that these verses meant time was not uniform.
Al-Tabari, in the tenth century, records interpretations of the differing day-lengths that treat them as describing distinct events and distinct measures, rather than trying to force them into one figure. Ibn Kathir discusses the fifty thousand years of 70:4 in relation to the Day of Judgement and notes reports that its length will be experienced differently by different people - light for the believer, crushing for others. Al-Qurtubi engages the apparent conflict between the figures directly and resolves it through context.
Why this matters
The idea that duration varies by observer and circumstance was already in the classical commentary, derived from the text itself, centuries before anyone measured a clock running slow. Modern physics didn't create this reading. It supplied a mechanism for something exegetes had already concluded.
That reassures me more than any correspondence with a modern finding would. A reading that predates the science it's said to match is a much stronger position than one invented to fit.
Time as something created
Underneath all of this sits a theological claim that the physics happens to make easier to picture.
If time is created - a feature of this universe rather than a container the universe sits inside - then the One who created it is not within it. Past, present and future are real distinctions for us, operating inside the system. They aren't constraints on the One who made the system.
This isn't a modern idea either. Muslim theologians argued for centuries that God is qadim, without beginning, and that time began with creation. Al-Ghazali dealt with the question of what God was "doing before" creating the world by pointing out that the question smuggles in a false assumption - there was no "before", because "before" is a temporal relation and time hadn't started.
Time is part of creation
Not a stage God stands on. It began when the universe began, alongside space.
"Before creation" is malformed
The phrase assumes a timeline outside time. There isn't one, so the question dissolves rather than getting answered.
God isn't waiting
Nothing is in His future, because sequence is a property of the created order rather than of Him.
Modern cosmology arrived somewhere adjacent by a different route. If spacetime itself began at the Big Bang, then "what happened before" is not a question with a coherent answer - not because we lack data, but because "before" doesn't apply. Hawking made essentially that point, comparing it to asking what lies south of the South Pole.
Why this changes how qadar works
This is where the whole subject stopped being abstract for me.
I used to picture divine decree - qadar - as God writing out a timeline in advance and then watching it play through. Which raises the obvious objection people have wrestled with forever: if it's written, in what sense am I choosing anything?
But look at what that picture assumes. It puts God inside time, in a "before" where the writing happens, waiting for the story to reach its end. That's the error.
The reframe
If time is created and God is outside it, there's no "in advance" from His side. Divine knowledge isn't foresight, because nothing is ahead of Him. What we experience as sequence is present at once to a knowledge that isn't sequential - which means being known is not the same as being caused.
I'll be honest that this doesn't dissolve every difficulty around free will. Serious people have argued about it for centuries and I'm not going to settle it in a blog post. But it removes the crudest version of the problem - the picture of God as an author who wrote the script early and is now reading along, which was the version that used to trouble me most.
How careful should we be with this?
Same caution I apply across this category, and it matters here because this topic attracts more stretching than most.
Don't claim it's physics
These verses contain no equations, no mechanisms, no predictions. They speak about time in a way that assumes variability. That's the claim, and it's enough.
Don't say science proves the Qur'an
Science revises itself. Tie faith to a current theory and you inherit every future correction to it.
Keep the two meanings apart
Perceived duration and physical dilation are different phenomena. Merging them is the single commonest error in this genre.
Drop the "eternal universe refuted" line
Relativity complicates the older materialist picture. It doesn't settle metaphysics, and claiming it does invites an easy rebuttal.
What survives all that caution still seems to me remarkable. A seventh-century text that habitually attaches "of what you count" to its durations. That gives a day of a thousand years in one place and fifty thousand in another without any apparent discomfort. That tells of sleepers who lose three centuries and feel an afternoon, and a man shown three disagreeing clocks in a single scene. That never once, anywhere, treats time as a fixed universal quantity.
Every culture at the time assumed the opposite. Physics assumed it until 1905.
Where I've landed: I'm not going to tell you the Qur'an contains relativity. It doesn't, and saying so would be easy to take apart in an afternoon. What I'd say instead is narrower and much harder to dismiss: the text consistently declines to treat time as absolute, at a moment in history when treating it as absolute was simply what everyone did, including the best minds available. That's the bit I can't explain away. And the theological payoff is bigger than the scientific one anyway - if time is made, then the One who made it isn't standing in it, and a great deal about how we picture God's knowledge has to be rebuilt from there.
Common questions
Does the Qur'an say time is relative?
Not in technical terms, but it consistently treats duration as depending on the observer. It qualifies time spans with "of what you count" (22:47, 32:5), gives different lengths for different "days", and describes sleepers who experienced three centuries as a single day. It never presents time as a fixed universal quantity.
