The word "Islam" is derived from the Arabic root salama, which means to be in a state of peace, safety, and security. Therefore, a Muslim is simply a person who consciously surrenders, submits, and obeys the laws of Almighty Allah. Through this act of voluntary submission, the individual achieves inner peace and security.
This definition highlights that Islam is not a new religion but rather the original way of life followed by all righteous figures throughout history.
I. The Single Message of All Prophets
All known and respected Prophets and Messengers—including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, Jesus the son of Mary, and Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon them all)—were sent by the same Almighty Allah with the same core message.
Their singular teaching was: Worship the One Almighty Allah, fulfill the purpose of your life, and do good deeds.
If one reads the original scriptures carefully, the simple, consistent message conveyed across time and language was always: "Worship one Allah". As Allah says in the Qur'an, clarifying the universal command given to all communities:
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakkah. And that is the correct religion.” (Qur'an 98:5)
This original message of submission means that all Prophets and Messengers mentioned above can be rightly considered "Muslims" because they dedicated their lives to submitting to Allah's will. Critically, none of those honorable Prophets ever said, "I am Allah; worship me."
II. The Universal State of Submission
The word "Muslim" is not limited to human beings; it describes anything that submits to the laws established by the Almighty Creator. Everything that functions according to Allah's universal and constant laws is, in essence, a Muslim:
- When a child is born at the precise time Allah decrees, it is a Muslim.
- When the sun travels in its orbit, it is a Muslim.
- When the moon circles the earth, it is a Muslim.
- The fundamental law of gravity that governs the cosmos is a Muslim law.
Everything in creation submits to Allah's immutable laws. Therefore, when we consciously choose to obey the laws of Almighty Allah in our lives, we are simply aligning ourselves with the universe and fulfilling our natural purpose as Muslims.
