Is the Quran Created? The Cosmic Debate That Shaped Islam

By Mohammad Aamir • 8 min read

The Burning Question: Created or Uncreated?

I'll be honest, when we hold a Mushaf (a physical copy of the Quran) in our hands, we rarely stop to think about the metaphysical reality of what we are touching. But a few generations after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad , scholars grappled with a cosmic dilemma that literally shook the Muslim world: Is the Quran—written on pages and recited by human tongues—created by Allah, or is it an eternal, uncreated part of His very Being?

This wasn't just a debate over minor semantics. People were imprisoned, tortured, and killed over this question. The stakes were incredibly high:

  • If the Quran is created, it becomes a mere product of Divine Will, entirely separate from Allah's Essence. It becomes subject to the limitations of creation, time, and human interpretation.
  • If the Quran is uncreated, it shares Allah's eternal nature—untouched by time, space, or limitation. It means when you read the Quran, you are engaging with a divine attribute.

The Inquisition (Mihna) & Imam Ahmad

To truly appreciate this, we have to look back at one of the darkest periods in Islamic intellectual history: the Mihna (the Inquisition) initiated by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Ma'mun in the 9th century.

The Trap of the Rationalists

A group of theologians known as the Mu'tazilites (the Rationalists) argued that if the Quran was "uncreated," it would mean there were two eternal things: Allah and the Quran. They claimed this threatened Tawheed (the absolute Oneness of God). Therefore, they concluded, the Quran must be a created object.

The Caliph forced this view upon the empire. Scholars were flogged and threatened with death if they did not agree that the Quran was a creation.

One man famously stood firm against the might of the entire empire: Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Enduring years of brutal imprisonment and torture, he refused to compromise. He argued brilliantly that Allah's Speech (Kalam) is an attribute of Allah, just like His Knowledge or His Power. You cannot separate Allah from His Knowledge, and you cannot separate Him from His Speech. Therefore, His Speech is uncreated.

Imam Ahmad's unyielding resilience eventually broke the Inquisition, saving orthodox Islamic theology for all future generations.

The Dual Reality of the Quran

Through this immense struggle, the scholars of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah solidified the beautiful orthodox consensus we hold today.

The Paper vs. The Meaning

"The Quran is Allah's uncreated Speech. The ink, the paper, and the human recitation are created. Yet these created vessels carry His Eternal Word."

When you recite the Quran, your voice is created (it relies on biological vocal cords, air, and soundwaves). The paper the Mushaf is printed on is created in a factory. But the meanings are uncreated—they are the eternal Truths flowing directly from Allah.

Think of it like reading a royal decree: The paper is made of wood. The ink is made of soot. But the king's command is his authority. The vessel is temporary, but the Truth it carries is divine.

The Infinite Ocean of Divine Speech

Allah's speech is entirely beyond human comprehension. It is not limited to the ink on the pages we hold.

"If all the trees on earth were pens, and the sea [were ink] replenished by seven more seas, Allah's Words would never be exhausted..." (Quran 31:27)

Key Insight: Creation is finite; Allah's Speech is boundless. The Mushaf you hold in your hands is a single, beautiful cup drawn from an infinite ocean.

Beyond Language: How Allah Speaks to Creation

Because Allah's speech is an eternal attribute, He communicates with His creation in ways that transcend human languages like Arabic, English, or Urdu. The Quran reveals fascinating examples of divine communication (Wahy) directed at non-humans.

1. Inspiring the Bee

"And your Lord inspired (awha) the bee: 'Build hives in mountains and trees...'" (Quran 16:68). Allah speaks to the very instincts of insects, programming their intricate, perfect behaviours without using spoken words.

2. Commanding the Earth

On the Day of Judgment, the earth will shake and spill its secrets "Because your Lord has commanded (awha) it." (Quran 99:5). Even the inanimate tectonic plates respond to the uncreated speech of their Master.

3. The Burning Bush

When Prophet Musa (AS) stood before the burning bush, he heard a voice calling him. But the source of that command was the eternal, uncreated Speech of Allah, translated into a medium that a human mind could temporarily perceive without shattering.

The Intercession of the Uncreated Word

Because the Quran is an uncreated attribute of Allah, it possesses a reality and power far beyond a normal book. The Prophet Muhammad taught us that the Quran will actually take on a form to intercede for us when we are most desperate.

He said: "Read the Quran, for indeed it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions" (Muslim). In the terrifying darkness of the grave, the Quran will manifest as a beautiful, comforting companion, defending the believer from punishment.

A created book made of paper cannot intercede for you before God. But the Uncreated Word of God will advocate for you, because you spent your life honouring it.

Why This Theology Transforms You

Understanding that the Quran is uncreated isn't just for theology classrooms. It drastically changes exactly how you interact with the book in your daily life.

When Anxiety Hits

Reciting the Quran actively connects your anxious, constantly changing heart to the Unchanging, Eternal Reality. You are grounding yourself in the eternal.

When You Feel Lost

Contemplating the verses (Tafakkur) isn't just reading old history; it is inviting living, uncreated Divine guidance to illuminate your specific, modern situation.

When You Feel Small

Holding a physical Mushaf in your hands means you are literally holding a manifestation of eternity. The Creator of the cosmos is speaking directly to you.

A Love Letter From Before Time

That 'Uthmani script in your hands? It is not just a book of rules, and it certainly isn't a mere collection of historical stories. It is a direct communication from your Creator, existing before time itself began, sent down through the heavens specifically to guide you home.

The next time you open it, remember what Imam Ahmad fought for: You are engaging with the very attribute of Allah. Treat it with the awe it deserves.

Islamic Principles of Justice: Adl, Insaf & Quran

Justice ('Adl) and fairness ('Insaf) are not merely desirable virtues; they are foundational pillars of the Islamic faith and governance. Islamic Principles of Justice: Adl, Insaf & Quran By Mohammad Aamir • Published March 2025 • 15 Min Read Executive Summary & Ethical Overview I'll be honest: when outsiders study religious law, they often imagine strict rules designed merely to control people or enforce authority. But when we look directly into the Holy Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah, we discover that the entire teleological purpose of divine revelation is to establish unshakeable justice ( 'Adl ) and fairness ( 'Insaf ). In Islam, justice is not a secondary social pleasantry—it is an explicit attribute of Almighty Allah ( Al-'Adl ) and the absolute benchmark of human stewardship on Earth ( Khilafah ). Every Muslim proudly affirms Jesus (AS) as: Messenger of Allah A mighty Prophet sent to guide the Children of Israel, carrying the exact same core message as Abraham and Moses before him. ...
